This dedication is driven through the process of guiding, developing, motivating and empowering its employees.


Our Legacy

The organization first began its journey back in 1877, with the inauguration of its first showroom in Calcutta (Kolkata) a few months shortly after Queen Victoria declared herself Empress of India.

Even in its nascent years Lawrence & Mayo had begun to develop a reputation for itself as one of nation’s finest opticians.

Over the years, queens, viceroys, barons and other people of high repute chose Lawrence & Mayo as their personal optician. During the Wimbledon Finals of 1923, Queen Mary was spotted styling the Amulet inspired “glare protectors” from Lawrence & Mayo.

In 1938, Lawrence & Mayo was incorporated under the Indian Companies Act (1913) as a Private Limited Company under the leadership and guidance of Mr. I C Mendonsa. It is Mr. Mendonsa and his family that laid down the foundation for Lawrence & Mayo as the family-run business it is known as today.

After Independence,Lawrence & Mayo re-oriented its mission, focus and objectives to support the needs of a developing India. Over the years the company has pioneered various products, services and techniques that have changed and helped shape the optical industry. In 1975, Lawrence & Mayo became the first optician in the country to introduce contact lenses. Lawrence & Mayo even setup wholly-owned manufacturing units in the major metropolitan cities across the country to ensure a steady and regular supply of contact lenses for its customers. Computer Eye-Testing, a technique used widely today to test eyesight was first brought to India and effectively implemented by Lawrence & Mayo.

Given the company’s image, perception, reliability and reputation, Lawrence & Mayo became the first choice for many internationally recognized brands such as Rayban, as a platform to launch themselves into the Indian market.

L&M Today

Lawrence & Mayo has come a long way since its single store establishment in Kolkata. In the 21st century, India’s neighbourhood optician has developed a vast network of showrooms spanning important states, districts, cities and towns build on the support, patronage and trust of its customers.

Today, Lawrence & Mayo has a network of over 100 showrooms covering 32 major cities and towns across India. Over the past 139 years of the company’s legacy; product styles have changed, designs have improved, techniques have been adopted, discarded and modified, yet the only constant that remains is Lawrence & Mayo’s unwavering commitment and dedication to its customers.
