Thin lens (high Index) :
In case you have a moderate or high prescription, instead of wearing those unsightly glasses and becoming the laughing stock of many, you can opt for sleek high index lenses, which could reduce your lens thickness by upto 50 %. These lenses bend more light and can thus make your lenses more compact, lightweight and are a big boon for those with high prescriptions.

All plastic lenses are indicated by the numbers: 1.49, 1.56, 1.60, 1.67, 1.74 in Plastics and in glass the index goes up to 1.8 and 1.9. These numbers are indicative of their ability to bend light. The higher the number the more it bends light and hence for a given prescription it can make your lens more compact and hence less heavy on your frame as well as on your face. However the benefit of this compactness is felt only when the optical power is greater than 3.00.

Spectacle lenses are commonly made of glass and plastic. In these itself there are many kinds but the more recently added lens material that is very popular for its safety property (impact resistance) is Polycarbonate lenses.
Glass Vs Plastic (organic) lenses:
In the early days there was no choice. We had only glass lenses and hence they were the best. Today as a shopper in the eye care market you have a huge variety of options and materials. Glass lenses don't scratch easily. Plastic lenses when compared to glass tend to scratch easier if they are not maintained with care. However surface treatments have been done on plastic lenses such as hard coating and hard multi clean coating that keep your lenses lasting longer.
Polycarbonate Lenses (Thin, light, Impact Resistant and UV Protection) :
• These lenses have an Impact resistance safety feature.
• They are thinner and lighter.
• They provide 100% UV protection.

All plastic lenses are lightweight and impact resistant but they tend to get easily scratched, which can be overcome by a lens surface treatment that toughens the lens and is called by names like Hard Coating, Tough Coating and SRC lens. The lenses are treated with chemical lacquers by coating them with a film to increase resistance. However, these treatments make your lens scratch resistant not scratch proof.
